I was sorry to read another member of my era had passed away, his youth was similar to mine, I to pushed a loaded butchers bike and did a paper round to earn a few bob.
I discovered this web site because my niece is moving to Battle from Braughing in Hertfordshire, from one lovely area to another, I was stationed on an AA site at Penvensy during the Blitz and watched helplessly as the German bombers in their hundreds passed over head, to our home town, we were all Londoners, our gun could not reach that height.

I was so sorry to hear your sad news. I was able to bring Ivor to the old Battle Cinema when the Rotary Club held two charity film shows there and he was able to visit the projection box.
What a wonderful website he produced - please keep up the good work.
My condolences to all the family.

I found your site on searching for pictures of Joe's Bridge. I conducted a number of battlefield tours for members of the Irish Guards to the Market Garden Corridor and may have heard more about the action at the bridge than you. If you would like to have some details please let me know.
I am sorry that you have just lost your father. At least unlike so many of us you talked to him about his service and therefore his memories will live on.
Best wishes

My father's family lived Battle. I remember visiting my dad's mum and the 2 remaining sisters, when I was young. Probably around 1947. I cannot remember the exact address but the little row of terraced houses are still there, opposite a nasty intersection with a pub right at the point, with a steep hill going down on the right hand side. The 2 aunts were a Miss Nell Blundell and a married one called Mrs. Alice Mann, her son was Killed out in front of the Pub, date unknown. I am trying to obtain further info about my family, if you know or have heard of them it would be helpful. They were a large family of 13 I believe.

Ivor and I were cousins, which might seem strange given the big disparity in our ages (I am 45, and he was born in the same year as my late father, Michael Watson)We met up regularly over the past few years; the final time being in late December 2007. This was during a visit to Hastings, where I grew up, and eventually will return to live. I thought he was looking a little bit tired. We talked about having a meal out in Battle when I was over again during the summer. I am really saddened to hear of his sudden passing, I was happy to meet his friend, Margaret, and I extend my condolences to her as well. Ivor was always a true gentleman, and I was proud to have known him. Rest in Peace...

Hi, I liked the Homeguard picture, I started a re-
enactment homeguard group up here in the North East. We did
one show at county Hall Durham got a lot of good comments,
Had 5 members all kitted out, had a good day for it. In my
eye they were all unsung hero's, I was only 2 when the war
started but old enough to see them doing war games on
street corners. I also had a Roman group both groups called
[Northguard] till I got shafted by my so call friend, Water
under the bridge as they say to much politic now, keep up
the good work they show have a mention in November?[ Cpt

A few years ago I gave old photographs of Glengorse
schoolboys (1930's)to a gentleman who had a small museum

photographs.
Just thought they may be of interest to any ex-pupils or

I know in the past Hastings had many cinemas but the photo

curiousity and tell me where it was and what is on its
current location.
