Isaac Ingall

Picture taken from 'A Guide to Battle Abbey' by CLWC
This photo (of me - the WebMaster) was taken in 1968 - In the Abbey Graveyard. It appeared in the Essex Countryside magazine
My Grandad wrote

"I wonder if this photograph might be of interest to your readers,
or if there are any authentic records of anyone living to a greater
age in this country, Isaac Ingalls was in the employ of successive
generations of the Webster family, who were the owners of Battle
Abbey. When a lad he was brought to Battle Abbey by Sir Thomas
Webster as his postillion and was gradually advanced until he
became head of the establishment and served as steward. He is
said to have said that he had waitied at table for ninety years and
had been in the emply of the Webster family for 100 years. He was
active to the last and took daily rambles around the extensive
grounds and in the town. He died on April 2 1798 and was buried
in Battle churchyard which is close to Battle Abbey."
